African American Museum of Nassau County (AAM)
The mission of the African American Museum of Nassau County
(AAM) is to provide programming and events that foster the
intellectual development of community members and visitors
with an interest in African-American art, history and
culture. A primary goal is to disseminate the history of
African-Americans on Long Island and the African-American
contribution to the social and cultural development of
American society through material and visual culture. The
African American Museum, located in Hempstead, New York,
opened in 1970, at the height of the black power movement,
as the Black History Exhibit Center. It is the only African
American history museum on Long Island, and is located to
serve Nassau County's largest African-American population.
The museum is a multi-disciplinary cultural institution that
provides art installations, historical exhibitions, film
programs, community service events, and educational
programming.
This 6,000-square-foot facility, offers a rotating series of
exhibits showcasing local and national African American
artists. The African American Museum also houses the African
Atlantic Genealogy Society. This organization provides
workshops and individual research instruction in family
genealogy. The museum has installed a new E-Learning Program
that offers an innovative pedagogical approach, using
subject headings relative to Americans of African descent,
for conducting research on the internet. The African
American Museum is currently working on methods to
expand the community's understanding of knowledge
organization methods, literary warrant, and information
retrieval and how these relate to African-American social
history.

Mother's Kiss
A Mother's Kiss is an all volunteer organization dedicated
to the families of childhood cancer patients. Since 1994 it
has been our goal to help these very special families on
both an emotional and financial level. The initial diagnosis
of pediatric cancer can set a young family into a tailspin.
Aside from the fears associated with the sickness, families
are forced to make very difficult decisions. One parent will
often need to leave their job to care for the child in this
very crucial time. Family finances and emotional strengths
are tested to the limit.

Arts
In Southold Town
The purpose of the Arts in Southold Town is to support and
encourage participation in and appreciation of the arts.
The North Fork and the Arts: The North Fork of Long Island
is a narrow peninsula thirty miles long, surrounded by
water, and located less than 100 miles east of New York
City. The resident population is estimated at about 20,000,
but may more than double during the height of the tourist
season which begins in April and continues through December.
The predominant land use within the Town of Southold is
agriculture, which provides magnificent vistas of cultivated
fields, vineyards and open space. As one of the region's
remaining unspoiled areas, the Nature Conservancy has
declared it "one of the last great places" whose residents
are singularly committed to preserving their environment and
quality of life.
The North Fork, however, is entering a period of exciting
growth:
- In general, more people with means and education are
looking for a better place to live, and with it a more
fulfilling lifestyle;
- Specifically, technology has made it increasingly possible
for professionals to live and work where they want, without
the inconvenience of commuting;
- As the baby boom generation nears retirement age, more
people are buying and building in an area that offers
safety, sanity, quiet, privacy, clean air, natural beauty,
community and cultural advantage; and,
- What was previously only a seasonal economy has become a
year-round one, positioned neatly between the New York metro
area and the expanding cultural and business centers of New
England.

Chinese
Cultural Association of Long Island (CCALI)
The Chinese Cultural
Association of Long Island (CCALI) Chinese school first
opened its doors in 1979 with only a few students.
Nevertheless, classes were held each Saturday at the West
Hempstead Long Island Chinese Cultural Center.
Eventually our enrollment increased and in 1985 the Chinese
School moved to its present location at the New York
Institute of Technology in Old Westbury. As the Chinese
School brought together a greater number of students and
members in the Chinese community, the function of CCALI
broadened to include the dissemination of the Chinese
culture and the elevation of ethnic Chinese welfare in Long
Island. In 1986, CCALI officially became a New York State
non-profit community organization.
In recent years, CCALI membership expanded rapidly as a
result of the influx of ethnic Chinese on Long Island as
well as the growing interest of other groups in learning
Chinese. Our school attracts students not only from Long
Island, but also from Manhattan and Queens. Presently, the
Chinese school has an annual enrollment of over 200 students
and more than thirty teachers. CCALI also offers many
cultural enriching classes for the parents of students
attending the Chinese School. As a community organization,
CCALI continues to improve owing to the talents and
dedications of the volunteers within our community.
The mission of the Chinese Cultural Association of Long
Island (CCALI) is to educate future generations about the
Chinese language and culture as well as to expand Chinese
cultural exchange in our society.

Coastal Research
& Education Society of Long Island
The Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island,
was founded in the summer of 1996 by a group of experts in
marine mammal science, environmental sciences, education and
conservation. CRESLI was formed for the purposes of
conducting research, providing educational experiences and
promoting conservation of coastal ecosystems.
Research and education are inextricably linked in all CRESLI
activities. As such, CRESLI actively seeks cooperative
alliances with researchers, educational institutions, and
the participation of the general public. Many of the
cetacean research projects, for example, utilize public
whale watch cruises as a platform for collecting data and
educating the public at the same time.
Commercial fishermen and pleasure boaters have also been
enlisted to provide sighting information used in population
and distribution studies, as well as assisting in the rescue
of stranded and entrapped animals. This public participation
has not only led to the finding that Long Island's
coastlines provide a critical habitat for juvenile
loggerhead, Kemp's ridley and green sea turtles, but has
also fostered greater awareness and appreciation of these
animals and their habitats among fishermen, boaters and the
public.
Cooperative alliances with institutions such as Dowling
College and others are entirely consistent with CRESLI's
mission and purpose. The sharing of resources, and
coordination of activities, significantly enhances the
opportunities for research and public education.
The Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island's
Objectives
- To stimulate public interest in and to encourage
conservation of coastal ecosystems through education
programs for schools and public and private organizations.
- To foster a lifelong appreciation of and sense of
stewardship towards coastal ecosystems through our programs,
outreach activities and membership.
- To conduct research that will enable greater understanding
of coastal ecosystems and to disseminate this information
through scientific publications and conferences and
meetings.
- To provide research and educational opportunities to
students wishing to pursue educational interests or careers
in coastal studies.
- To support marine mammal and sea turtle stranding programs
which respond to stranded marine mammals and turtles with
the goal of rehabilitating these animals for release back to
the wild.
- To be a regional, national and international resource on
marine mammal, sea turtle and pelagic bird species and their
environments for researchers, educators and policy makers.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County improves
individual lives by strengthening families, building skills

pests with minimal use of chemical pesticides.
A uniquely American invention, Cooperative Extension was
created in 1914 as part of the US Department of

Trails Perseveration Society (EHTPS)
The East Hampton Trails Preservation Society, Inc is a
not-for-profit organization dedicated to the creation and
protection of trails, greenbelts, and open spaces in the
Town of East Hampton. The diverse natural beauty of the East
End attracts many who love its open spaces and spectacular

throughout the year. No reservations are required.
Knowledgeable hike leaders guide every step of the 2 to 14
mile hikes. Most hikes are in the range of 3 to 5 miles.
East Hampton Trails Preservation Society has been working
for the preservation of greenbelt trails for 25 years and
continues that tradition by actively working with state,
county, and town officials. Members make presentations at
public meetings and serve on committees related to open
space planning and park management. Volunteers from East
Hampton Trails Preservation Society are deeply involved in
trail planning, mapping, and maintenance activities and have
also helped create trails.
The town of East Hampton has approximately two hundred miles
of trails, including a continuous forty-five mile section of
the Paumanok Path, stretching from the Southampton-East
Hampton town line to the Montauk Lighthouse. It has become
the main artery of the East Hampton trail system, containing
numerous linkages to other trails. The Path connects many
state, county, and town parks and also crosses private land
with the cooperation of the landowners. This system is used
and enjoyed by thousands of hikers, mountain bicyclists, and
horseback riders every year.

Garden
City Park Civic Association
The Garden City Park Civic Association was formed in 1965,
with the purpose of promoting civic pride, and protecting
the interests of property owners in the community. Garden
City Park has changed since then, and so has the Garden City
Park Civic Association.
Our mission is still to promote civic pride, and to protect
the interests of property owners, but it is much more than
that. Quality of life, Safety, and a Voice for our community
in local government are some of the issues the "New" Garden
City Park Civic Association will be addressing. We plan on
working with local government, law enforcement, and local
businesses to make Garden City Park an even Better Place to

Huntington Breast
Cancer Action Coalition (HBCAC)
Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition (HBCAC) is a
not-for-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the
ultimate eradication of breast cancer through education and
awareness. Our mission is to focus on prevention methods
while actively helping those who are faced with a positive
diagnosis. Since 1992, Huntington Breast Cancer Action
Coalition has forged accessible pathways of involvement in
the complex issue of breast health. Those pathways include
Awareness:
HBCAC works to keep breast cancer awareness in the forefront
of public concern on Long Island.
Education:
HBCAC informs the public on methods available for early
detection/screening and general breast health. We have
created a network for breast health consumers consisting of
educational resources, trained volunteers and breast care
experts. We work in partnership with local hospitals,
medical offices, nutritional counselors and governmental
agencies.
Advocacy:
At every level of government, from Huntington Town Hall to
Washington D.C., we encourage research, funding and
legislation that will focus on prevention and intervention;
ultimately leading to the eradication of breast cancer.
Community Involvement:
HBCAC mobilizes volunteers and community minded people in a
broad based "coalition of concern". Our community outreach
includes speakers, lectures, panelists, seminars,
publications, newsletters, resource guides, calendars and
other informative references.
Support:
HBCAC provides ongoing support groups, educational programs
and other resources and products for women and men diagnosed

Katie's Critters Small Animal Rescue
Katie's Critters Small Animal Rescue, Inc.'s mission is to
help in the prevention of cruelty to small animals. We
rescue and rehabilitate abandoned, abused, neglected, and
unwanted small animals, including birds. We assist
Brookhaven Town Animal Shelter, Kent Animal Shelter, as well
as the Nassau County S.P.C.A and The Suffolk CountyS.P.C.A..
We take in Ferrets, Guinea Pigs, Rats, Hamsters, Gerbils,
Chinchillas, Rabbits, Parakeets, Conures, Cockatiels,
Cockatoos, ect. We provide them with food, shelter, proper
veterinary care, and loving, caring home environment until
they are adopted. We get them the proper veterinary care
that they need, and deserve, and when they are ready, we
place them up for adoption to suitable, loving, caring
homes. However, some animals that we take in may be too
aggressive, or we are not successful in rehabilitating them.
Therefore, they will stay here with us as sanctuary pets. We
are a NO KILL RESCUE! Every animal deserves a chance at
life, and we make it happen!
We also like to educate the public on the overpopulation of
small animals, and the need to try to spay and neuter their
small animals, or only house the same sex animals together.
We understand the concern about the anesthesia and these
small critters, so that is why we only will adopt out the
same sex animals. Too many are ending up in rescues, such as
ours. We are looking out for the welfare of any and all
small animals, and birds.
We do not promote breeding of any kind. Adoption of small
animals is far more better than supporting mills and over
breeding of animals by purchasing them!

Long
Island Greyhound Transfer (LIGHT)
Sometime in 1995, after seeing a National Geographic special
called "Racing for their Lives," a story about the plight of
the racing GreyHound, six people from the community gathered
around a kitchen table and started L.I.G.H.T. (Long Island
GreyHound Transfer.) We are the first Long Island based 501
(c) (3) non-profit, all-volunteer run GreyHound rescue
organization.
Since that time, we have been featured in several newspaper
articles, as well as appearing on Long Island CH.12 'The
Family Pet', the Martha Stewart Living Show, National
Geographic Today, the Long Island Ducks, the New York Mets,
Broadway Barks and various other local TV and radio
stations. Throughout each year we also attend several
community fairs and festivals, school assemblies, Boy & Girl
Scout Troop's Meetings, all to alert and educate the public
about the plight of the GreyHound once their 'racing days'
are over with.
Each year over thirty thousand GreyHounds nationwide, are
'put down' due to lack of available homes. We have rescued
and placed (in 'forever homes') over twelve hundred
GreyHounds since our beginning. We still have a long way to
go. We always need donations for medical and operational
costs. All contributions to L.I.G.H.T. are tax deductable.

Network physicians and clinicians based on evidence-based
medicine and "best practices".
LIHN's state-of-the-art databases enables the Network to
monitor, evaluate, and improve performance on an extensive
array of indicators relating to efficiency and quality of

LIHN has achieved remarkable results. In addition to
improvements in efficiency, LIHN has increased the quality

Island New York City Retired Firefighters

Retired Firefighters is a fraternal organization of professional
firefighters from New York City , both active and retired,

Long Island Songwriter Organization (ISS)
The Island Songwriter
Showcase (ISS) is a Long Island-based organization of
songwriters, lyricists, producers, engineers, performers,
and DJ's with a common purpose: to develop and support
musical talent through community, workshops, peer review and
live performances. The ISS has become the largest, most
visible and sought-after group of songwriters on Long
Island. The ISS welcomes songwriters with a variety of
backgrounds, experience and objectives. Workshops, showcases
and membership is free to anyone interested in improving
their craft and helping others to do the same.
The history of the ISS begins in the late 70s with Harry
Chapin and Rob Baranello (and myself). Harry held a
songwriter circle in his home which I attended. The group
inspired several independent songwriter groups in the area.
Rob, who had attended some of the Manhattan songwriter
groups, founded the ISS, holding the first meeting in the
Huntington Public Library on Main Street. Since then, the
ISS has enjoyed the attendance and contributions of many
fine songwriters and continues to grow.
The story of the ISS continues in the tradition of a
volunteer organization for the art of songwriting and the
support and success of songwriters.

Luke Neuhedel
Foundation
The Luke Neuhedel Foundation is dedicated to improving the
quality of life for children with cancer through education,
research and aid to families in need. Hepatoblastoma, liver
cancer, Luke Neuhedel, Paul Neuhedel, Rebcca Neuhedel,
lukefund, lukefest, pediatric cancer, luke, children's
cancer, benicio del toro, childhood cancer, children's
cancer awareness, solid tumor cancer, leukemia,
neuroblastoma.
Our goal is to share Luke's attitude toward life. Luke
experienced life as a child, and shared that vision with all
people he met. Everything was exciting, a new discovery,
whether it was a robin hopping across the lawn or a trip to
Disney World. We want to spread Luke's lesson in two ways:
- We will give children with cancer experiences that will
improve their quality of life. This is different for each
child. We especially seek to help children like Luke whose
age may disqualify them from other "wish"-type
organizations, i.e., children 2 and under and 19 and over.
- We want other children, especially those with rare liver
cancers, to have better odds than Luke did for survival. We
give assistance to families and children undergoing
experimental treatments.

Peconic History Project
The History Project, Inc. is a non-profit corporation. An
oral history of The Town of East Hampton in the twentieth
century. During the 20th Century, the East End, along with
the rest of the country, went from the horse and buggy to
the automobile. Rolling fields of cultivated land
interspersed with numerous dairy farms gave way to small
blocks of second growth forest surrounded by development.
Among the many changes in the human landscape have been the
disappearance of the Montauk Fishing Village; brief and now
fading memories of a thriving rum-running industry; and,
later, the loss of the local Menhaden Fishery.
We have gone from a time when everyone was related to nearly
everyone else to a time when the majority of people are from
"away". But, there are still many older members of the East
Hampton community who can provide us with important and
often colorful threads to our past, both through their
personal experiences and their observations. As time passes,
people that remember these things are a diminishing
resource. Accordingly, there was a definite and increasingly
urgent need for this resource to be captured.

Southampton Trails Preservation Society (SHTPS)
The Southampton Trails Preservation Society was formed in
1986 in response to the rapid development occurring in
Southampton Town. Primarily organized by a small group of
horseback riders, who saw their riding trails disappearing,
the group soon included hikers, birders, and other nature
enthusiasts. In 1990, with help from then County Legislator
Fred Thiele Jr., Southampton Trails Preservation Society
lobbied for a zoning amendment to recognize trails as a
natural resource to be protected and preserved for the
future. As a result of this legislation, trails are now
included in the planning process in the Town of Southampton
and motorized vehicles are prohibited on the trails. In
1994, Southampton Town Supervisor Fred Thiele called for a
Citizen Advisory Board to advise the Planning Board
regarding all issues trails-related. The Southampton Trails
Advisory Board, comprised of seven volunteers appointed by
the Planning Board, continues this work to secure new trails
and to protect the Town's existing trails.

provide comprehensive outpatient behavioral health services
to children and families residing in Nassau County. The
intent of our mission is to improve the client's functioning
within the context of the family and community. Every child
experiences life's ups and downs, as well as emotional and
social growing pains. Navigating life's challenges can be
more difficult for some than others, and family
circumstances can often play a major role in how a child
copes with everyday situations. The South Shore Child
Guidance Center is a nonprofit agency providing outpatient
behavioral health services for children from 5 to 18 years
of age, as well as services for siblings and parents as
needed.
