At the conclusion of the 2008-2009 season, New York Philharmonic Principal Clarinet Stanley Drucker celebrated 60 years as a member of the Orchestra and announced his retirement. In honor of his 50th anniversary, and in recognition of his highly respected and widely acknowledged musical excellence and dedication, he was named Musical America's 1998 Instrumentalist of the Year. He made approximately 190 solo appearances with the Philharmonic since joining it at age 19. The Philharmonic estimates that he performed in 10,200 concerts, which is approximately 70 percent of the total number of their concerts since 1842. He was Principal Clarinetist for a record 48 years, playing under 9 Music Directors, among them Bruno Walter, Dmitri Mitropolous, Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez and Zubin Mehta. He has performed in 60 countries on tour.
The Nassau Symphonic Choir, led by Director Louise O’Hanlon, is a four-part ensemble for high school vocalists. Members are exposed to classical, contemporary, and multicultural music with the goal of fostering an understanding of world cultures. Singing is an intensely personal experience and it is our hope that by making a deep connection with the music, members will, in turn, learn something about themselves and the world at large. As Symphonic Choir comes together to form a community of singers, we can, in turn, form a community of young people who care about each other and who spread joy through their music-making.
Directed by Marilyn Lehman, ACE was founded in 1965 by pianist Blanche Abram and clarinetist Naomi Drucker. The ensemble explores the great chamber music literature for clarinet and piano in combination with strings, woodwinds and voice and presents performances featuring world-class artists. ACE consists of the finest freelance musicians in the New York area and has been cited by critics for their superb presentations of chamber masterworks. Their latest CDs on Elysium are American Clarinet Treasures, featuring core members of ACE performing works by George Kleinsinger, Virgil Thomson, Daniel Gregory Mason, Elliott Carter, Douglas Moore and Gary Schocker, with guest artist Stanley Drucker and The American Chamber Ensemble Plays Peter Schickele, which features five of this modern master’s most important chamber works.
ACE's concert season is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and by private contributions.
