SLIME Students of Long Island Maker Expo 2017 Celebrating Innovation Creativity Learning at Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, Nassau County, Long Island, New York.
Get SLIME's at the Cradle. Students of Long Island Maker Expo comes to the Cradle of Aviation Museum. From recyclables to robotics, celebrating 21st century learning for all Long Island students.
SLIME is an interactive day of making for family and educators from all across Long Island. Hands-on learning activities from recyclables to robotics promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary for our children to participate in the global community. With more than 100 activities, demonstrations, presentations and speakers planned for the event, our future "makers" are prepared for an afternoon of educational fun.
The maker movement is a movement of people, not of things. As the resurgence of STEAM education, hands-on learning and "making" is rapidly spreading across the country in schools, libraries, museums, maker spaces and maker programs are being established to promote critical thinking and problem solving, empathy, collaboration, communication and a growth mindset.
From recyclables to robotics, drawing to drones, and books to building, this year's expo will be better than ever! Following two successful years, SLIME has upgraded to a new venue for 2017 and is sure to deliver the same level of excitement and intrigue for all the young minds that attend. With a variety of panels and workshop ranging from balloon car racers, catapults, coffee filter parachutes, CD spinners, robotic challenges, photo light sculptures, binary bracelets, 3D printing, many different types of robotics, plus more there is sure to be much to spark intrigue and curious minds. Featured workshops and activities include: Design Video Games with Bloxels, Game of Drones workshop, Green Screens workshop, The Dream Flag Project, and Microsoft: Hacking STEM.
Admission cost is $5.00 in advance; $7.00 the day of the event. Tickets are available for purchase online at www.cradleofaviation.org. Separate admission is required for museum exhibit galleries, dome theater viewing and video game exhibit. Don't miss out, reserve your tickets today! Attendees have a chance to win either a Mobile Makerspace or Presentation Station full of goodies for your school, or a 4-pack of Disney Park Hoppers for your family. Free raffle entry with your paid admission to SLIME.
In addition to their popular "Make and Donate" activities where participants support Habitat for Humanity and local animal shelters through making, this year SLIME will host a Long Island Kids "Make A Difference" Charity Pitch Fest. The winner will receive a donation in their name to a charity of their choice provided by the Suffolk School Library Media Association, along with a Barnes and Noble gift card.
As a leader and mentor for the students she has encountered throughout the years, Holzweiss was inspired to do more to bring their creativity and problem-solving skills to the service. Kristina A. Holzweiss is the co-founder of the non-profit organization Long Island LEADS, a founding member of the Nation of Makers, the National School Board Association's "20 to Watch" for 2017, and the recipient of the 2015 School Library Journal School Librarian of the Year.
