Deborah Dwork
Founding Director, Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University
Deborah Dwork is the Rose Professor of Holocaust History and Founding Director of the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University. She is a leading authority on university education in this field, as well as in her area of scholarly expertise, Holocaust history.
Professor Dwork's books include her now classic Children With a Star, which has been translated into many languages and was the subject of a CBC documentary. Dwork's child-centered history opened a fresh area of historical investigation and pioneered the use of oral histories, conducted and researched by Dwork, in Holocaust historiography. Her award winning book, Auschwitz, co-authored with Robert Jan van Pelt, resulted in an Emmy-nominated documentary "Auschwitz: The Blueprints of History". Other books co-authored by Dwork include Holocaust: A History and Flight from the Reich: Jewish Refugees, 1933-1946.
Dwork has been a Guggenheim Fellow, a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and a Fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies. A member of the USA delegation to the 31-member state International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, Dwork also serves on many advisory boards. She also works with non-profit organizations and foundations concerned with Holocaust education. Above all, she is a teacher and mentor to undergraduate and doctoral students who value her commitment to training the next generation of Holocaust scholars.
