The Montauk Point Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in New York State. The Lighthouse was authorized by the Second Congress, under President George Washington, in 1792. Construction began on June 7, 1796 and was completed on November 5, 1796. This historic landmark has been part of Long Island's land and seascape for over 200 years and still serves as an active aid to navigation.

This beautiful historic Montauk site plays frequent host to wedding ceremonies and other special events. Group and school tours (20 or more) are available on a year round basis at the Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum. The museum which is located in the 1860 Keepers' house, displays an assortment of many historical documents, and photographs. The Museum Parlor features a new case displaying two original documents. One is signed by Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson. It is the Congressional authorization, approved by President George Washington, to construct a lighthouse at Montauk Point. The second is signed by President George Washington. It authorizes the federal purchase of land from the Montauk Proprietors for the purpose of building a lighthouse at Montauk Point. The Gilmartin Galleries is home to an exhibit of whaling industry artifacts from the 19th century. The artifacts were also used in one of the last whale hunts conducted from shore in Wainscott in 1907.
