Divorce Mediation Center of Long Island
Are you separating or divorcing? Mediation is a tested,
sensitive, intelligent approach to the resolution of
separation, divorce, and custody disputes. It offers
divorcing couples a more effective and humane alternative to
the traditional adversarial process. With the help of a
trained professional mediator, couples in mediation work out
their settlement based solely on the needs of the couple and
their children, not on blame or fault.
Mediation is not intended to resolve past conflicts that may
have led to the decision to separate or divorce. Rather, the
process seeks to explore options for both the husband and
wife so that they may put the past behind them and
concentrate on the present and the future.
Areas of Mediation
- Family and Children
- Parenting Responsibilities (Access, Custody, and Support)-
Distribution of Marital Assets
- Spousal Maintenance (Alimony)-
- Other Relevant Issues
Experience has indicated that settlements reached through
mediation are completed more quickly and are more likely to
be honored by both parties than those reached through the
traditional adversarial process.
Mediation Process
An appointment will be made for the couple to be seen for a
brief consultation at no charge. Questions about mediation
will be answered. If you choose, you may begin the first
session of mediation immediately following the consultation.
Sessions are usually 1 to 1½ hours. The couple and the
mediator generally meet on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. This
can be modified as needed. The entire process averages
approximately six sessions. It may be fewer if there are no
minor children. It may be more if there are other
complicating issues to resolve.
While the process is "non-legal," understandings are reached
on all issues necessary for a Separation Agreement or a
Divorce. All laws, acts, guidelines, etc. are followed. The
mediator prepares a plain-language Memorandum of
Understanding setting forth all the terms needed for a
separation or divorce with the exception of legal language
and signatures. The couple may then submit the Memorandum of
Understanding to their attorney(s) who prepare(s) formal,
legally binding Separation Agreement, which may also be used
as a basis of a Divorce at this time or in the future.

Center for Divorce Mediation
Experienced Divorce Mediation
What is Divorce Mediation? For many couples the decision to
divorce is the first shot in an war that devastates every
family member. By the time the smoke clears, everyone is
hurt, angry and in financial difficulties. In divorce as in
war there are no winners - except perhaps the lawyers who
have been paid their fees.
There is a way to avoid this disaster, close out a painful
chapter in a family's life, and structure a new set of
relationships to the benefit of all. It is called Divorce
Mediation. Mediation is an approach to divorce that puts the
real needs of children and parents before the hurt feelings
and anger of a divorcing couple. Even couples who have not
been able to agree on anything find themselves reaching
agreement with the help of trained Mediators.

Divorce Mediation Center of New York
A Compassionate Alternative To Divorce Litigation
Establish a fair settlement with mediation services from our
Divorce Mediators in Patchogue, New York. The professionals
at Divorce Mediation Center of New York, LLC, provide an
alternative to litigation for divorce. Using a structured
process, we will help you resolve your differences and
arrive at a fair settlement agreement. Contact us today at

and explore all your options.
What Is Mediation?
Mediation is a process by which parties engage in
negotiations to resolve their differences with the
assistance of a mediator. Mediation is a confidential and
compassionate alternative to expensive and time-consuming
litigation.
What Is a Mediator's Role?
A mediator is a neutral third party trained in facilitating
discussion between you and your spouse in an effort to reach
a fair and amicable agreement. The mediator works hand in
hand with you to formulate and customize a written agreement
that fits your family's individual needs.
What Are the Benefits?
Unlike litigation, the parties never step inside of a
courtroom when the mediation is properly conducted. While
you are free to retain the services of an attorney, most
participants elect to mediate for themselves and save
thousands of dollars. Mediation is a cost-effective
alternative to litigation to successfully achieve divorce or
separation, while resolving issues of custody and
visitation, child support, property division, spousal
support, and relocation.
Mediation or Litigation
When parties litigate, each party must hire an attorney who
typically charges a high hourly rate, ranging from $300 to
$500 an hour. However, when you mediate with Divorce
Mediation Center of New York, you will receive an affordable
fee for the mediation, which is typically less than the cost
of one attorney in a litigated matter.
Mediation Saves Time & Money
There are many benefits to mediating your family matter with
our divorce mediator. You will save time and money while
being treated with respect and integrity. Our divorce
mediation service empowers you to put aside your differences
in order to obtain a divorce and to resolve issues of Child
Custody, Visitation, Child Support, Property Division, and
Spousal Support.

The Law Office of Gene Barr, Esq.
Long Island Divorce Mediation
Divorce Mediation because you are still a family. The sane
alternative to contentious litigation.
Experience tells us that a family going through divorce is a
family in crisis – the cost of which is borne by children.
When you first contemplate divorce you must begin to make
decisions that will seriously impact your family’s future.
One of the first decisions that you must make is how you are
going to pursue divorce. That decision, at least in part,
should be based upon the effect that the process you chose
will have upon your children. Your choices are
self-representation (divorce without assistance), litigation
or mediation.
Because of the complexity of matrimonial law, the complexity
of issues addressed in divorce, and the duties and
obligations assigned, self-representation, although your
right, is not recommended. Because self-representation poses
an unacceptable risk, your choices remain litigation or
mediation.
Divorce by litigation is by its very nature costly, hostile,
confrontational, argumentative, and counterproductive to
resolution. More importantly litigation serves to further
fracture an already fractured relationship making it more
difficult, if not impossible, for your family to move
forward through the difficult times of divorce to the
healing process. Litigation is also problematic because it
takes control away from those who most need it – you. It’s
your family; you know your strengths, weaknesses,
personalities, children’s’ needs, and financial capabilities
– it’s you that should be making the decisions on how best
to move your family forward through the crisis of divorce to
recovery, not disinterested third parties who have no real
interests in your family’s future. Mediation, on the other
hand, is cost effective, non-confrontational and most
importantly self-determinative; meaning that the outcome, as
it should be, is determined by you. Mediation remains - the
sane alternative to contentious litigation.
