Job/Employment/Help Wanted: The American Red
Cross - New York State Emergency Preparedness VISTA
Project (NYSEPP) is a collaborative effort between
chapters of the American Red Cross, the Corporation for
National and Community Service and the New York State
Emergency Management Office. During the 2009-2010 grant
year we will place 32 individuals in service at local
Chapters of the Red Cross.
In New York State, over 95% of the services provided to
the community by the Red Cross are delivered through
trained volunteers. On any given day, chapters in New
York respond to more than 13 local disasters and provide
critical life saving and emergency services to support
to those impacted by disaster. Through our AmeriCorps
VISTA program we will seek to build the capacity of our
agency to recruit, support and retain such volunteers.
Under the current VISTA position activities may include
outreach to increase knowledge of the local Red Cross,
recruitment for all age cohorts, working with the youth
and college population to promote civic engagement and
building relationships with local organizations for
partner opportunities.
VISTA members serving in NY receive a modest living
stipend, training, medical benefits, the option for
child care assistance and life insurance for a small
contribution. Upon successful completion of service
VISTA members are eligible for either a $1,200 cash
stipend or a $4725 education award. Our VISTA members
follow the work schedule of their specific site
(holidays and office time; 9-5 or 8-4) and are given 10
sick and 10 personal days for their service year.
We are currently reviewing applications and setting up
interviews with candidates whose interests and
experience match the needs of our program; eligible
candidates will begin service during the summer of 2009.
Current openings in the metro area are housed in Yaphank
and NYC.
