over a person's lifetime, in order to promote optimal health
and well-being treating the origins of an illness and its
symptoms. Once the healing process begins, it may bring to
the surface emotional and physical issues so they may be
released safely and gently. After treatment it's quite
common to feel unusually calm, relaxed or even very
energized. Well-being can be noticed right from the outset.

fluid in the joint that cushions movement preventing
pain. As we age, this fluid diminishes causing arthritis
pain in those areas. Every part of our body where
connective tissue or muscle is found therein lies
synovial fluid or hyaluronic acid. When we take HA

Founded in 1978, the AHMA remains true to its original
mission, serving as the leading advocate for the use of
holistic and integrative medicine by all licensed healthcare
providers. We embrace integrative, complementary and
alternative medicine techniques; we hold onto what is
helpful in allopathic medicine; and we understand that
healing includes your body, your mind, your emotions, and
your spirit.
The AHMA is committed to increasing awareness and
understanding of the natural healing tenets of Holistic
Medicine and to link together those who wish to utilize and
promote a holistic approach to conventional and integrative
medicine. We teach the value of prevention and wellness
instead of a “quick fix”--best accomplished through
correcting core imbalances and by addressing contributing
factors.
Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a system of traditional medicine native to India
and practiced in other parts of the world as a form of
alternative medicine. Ayurveda is considered to be a form of
complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) with several of
its methods such as herbs, massage, and Yoga as exercise or
alternative medicine - are applied on their own as a form of
CAM treatment.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine. A central
thesis of homeopathy is that an ill person can be treated
using a substance that can produce, in a healthy person,
symptoms similar to those of the illness. Practitioners
select treatments according to a patient consultation that
explores the physical and psychological state of the
patient, both of which are considered important to selecting
the remedy. According to homeopaths, serial dilution, with
shaking between each dilution, removes the toxic effects of
the substance, while the essential qualities are retained by
the diluent (water, sugar, or alcohol).
Naturopathy
Naturopathic medicine (also known as naturopathy, or natural
medicine) is a complementary and alternative medicine which
emphasizes the body's intrinsic ability to heal and maintain
itself. Naturopaths prefer to use natural remedies such as
herbs and foods rather than surgery or synthetic drugs.
Naturopathic practice includes many different modalities.
Practitioners emphasize a holistic approach to patient care,
and may recommend patients use conventional medicine
alongside their treatments.
Osteopathy
Osteopathy is an approach to healthcare that emphasizes the
role of the musculoskeletal system in health and disease. In
most countries osteopathy is a form of complementary
medicine, emphasizing a holistic approach and the skilled
use of a range of manual and physical treatment
interventions (osteopathic manipulative medicine, or OMM in
the United States) in the prevention and treatment of
disease. In practice, this most commonly relates to
musculoskeletal problems such as back and neck pain.
Therapeutic Massage
Therapeutic massage is a manual manipulation of the body's
soft tissue for the purpose of stimulating circulation and
promoting relaxation. It has been used in many world
cultures for more than 4,000 years. Therapeutic massage
allows you a quiet time to focus on yourself and become more
connected to your body. it is generally used for the
reduction of stress and pain and has been shown to boost the
immune system as well. Since most diseases are exacerbated
by stress, massage can help you become and stay healthier.
Therapeutic massage can help with the following: Stress
reduction, anxiety, relaxation, muscle aches pains, sleep
problems, depression, immune system function.
Holistic Medicine
Holistic medicine describes therapies that treat the person
as a whole, taking into account the person's overall
physical, mental, spiritual and emotional well being before
recommending traditional medicines, treatments and health
care. Holistic practitioners are spiritual healers that
administer such therapies, which can include acupuncture,
alternative medicines, herbs, homeopathy, meditation,
reflexology and chiropractic practices. Such healing
treatments are thought to alleviate depression, infertility
and loss of energy. Even animal creatures may benefit from
this holistic approach.
Holistic practitioners can be an alternative to traditional
medical and veterinary doctors and nurse professionals.
Holistic healers must have the proper school training and
programs under their belt to practice therapy methods such
as reflexology and acupuncture. Make sure any holistic
practitioner you consider is certified and has the proper
training in the healing treatments you seek. Go online to
get more information on spirituality and holistic medicine
and what it entails, as well as any health care training,
programs, and healing treatments a holistic practitioner
must possess. Look up holistic practitioners, healers, and
holistic health care practitioners in your local phone book
or search online directory listings for one near you. Ask
family and friends for recommendations on which holistic
practitioners they use and trust. If you’re looking for an
alternative to traditional doctors and medicine, a holistic
practitioner, rather than a DR or medical clinics, could be
for you. Narrow your search down to holistic practitioners
that offer exactly what you want, whether you want spiritual
advisement, acupuncture, reflexology treatments, massage,
herbal remedies, and even animal and veterinary holistic
therapies.
Holistic health is not itself a method of treatment, but is
an approach to how treatment should be applied. Holistic
concepts of health and fitness view achieving and
maintaining good health as requiring more than just taking
care of the various singular components that make up the
physical body, additionally incorporating aspects such as
emotional and spiritual well-being. The goal is a wellness
that encompasses the entire person, rather than just the
lack of physical pain or disease. This means that not
feeling sick, does not necessary mean you are well, just
that you are between Well and Sick. When symptoms develop,
it is often long after the cause of the symptoms occurred.
It is often used in contrast to the medical model that
focuses on treating symptoms and syndromes without
attempting to address functioning beyond the absence of
disease, the holistic approach focuses on the cause.
Myofascial Pain
Syndrome (MPS)
Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS) is a is a painful
musculoskeletal condition, a common cause of musculoskeletal
pain. MPS is characterized by the development of Myofascial
trigger points (TrPs) that are locally tender when active,
and refer pain through specific patterns to other areas of
the body. A trigger point or sensitive, painful area in the
muscle or the junction of the muscle and fascia (hence,
myofascial pain) develops due to any number of causes.
Trigger points are usually associated with a taut band, a
ropey thickening of the muscle tissue. Typically a trigger
point, when pressed upon, will cause the pain to be felt
elsewhere. This is what is considered "referred pain".
These factors can cause trigger points:
• Sudden trauma to musculoskeletal tissues (muscles,
ligaments, tendons, bursae)
• Injury to intervertebral discs
• Generalize fatigue (fibromyalgia is a perpetuating factor
of MPS, perhaps chronic fatigue syndrome may produce trigger
points as well)
• Repetitive motions; Excessive exercise; Muscle strain due
to over activity
• Systemic conditions (gall bladder inflammation, heart
attack, appendicitis, stomach irritation)
• Lack of activity (a broken arm in a sling)
• Nutritional deficiencies
• Hormonal changes (trigger point development during PMS or
menopause)
• Nervous tension or stress
• Chilling of areas of the body (sitting under an air
conditioning duct; sleeping in front of an air conditioner)
