Description: |
Peconic Dunes 4-H Camp Jr. Overnight Camp Grades 3-5 Summer 2016 at Peconic Dunes 4-H Camp in Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York.
Research-Based, Age Appropriate Activities
Campers will work with their peers, challenging one another to J-stroke, hit the bulls eye, act silly at improve and find the treasure at snorkeling, providing an ideal environment for positive youth development, including social and emotional growth.
Nature
Campers will spend their days exploring the LI Sound, Great Pond, and our forest, fields, and dunes in between.
Safety
RNs, EMTs, lifeguards, and those trained in their specific activity disciplines will supervise your child and keep them safe.
At Peconic Dunes we believe in the platinum rule: Do unto others as they would have done unto themselves. The only way we know how to accomplish this is with listening, the key ingredient to empathy and any great friendship. Every activity at Peconic Dunes works to build stronger relationships with cabin-mates, counselors and every other person in the community. The friendships we make at camp offer us welcome support whenever we are in the Challenge Zone.
For some people, the day starts a little earlier with The Bears (Polar, Yoga, and Alpha). Then the whole camp gathers for flag raising, Quotemeister and kudos. One of our favorite traditions is t-shirt signing, when campers sign each other's camp shirts, a Peconic Dunes "year book." Friday night, with everyone gathered around the campfire one last time, some campers are recognized by an instructor with a patch, one of the highest honors a camper can earn.

Be Healthy
Healthy minds work best with healthy bodies. Peconic Dunes has partnered with Cornell University on health studies to create healthier NYS 4-H Camps. We continually work to create a healthy balance of activity, nutrition and rest. Everyday our entire community gets a mid-day siesta and when we are not relaxing we are playing. Meals are cooked from scratch on-site so we can ensure quality ingredients and meet the needs of most dietary restrictions.
Learn
"Learning by doing" has been the 4-H mantra since 1902. Jr Day Camp offers 15 activities covering a range of topics so our developing scientists, artists, leaders, sailors, athletes and outdoors people can all find something they like best. Our instructors will work with your child and help them set a personal goal; to aspire to do something she or he's never done before. All activities are 1-hour, and instructors regularly offer different challenges during the period to keep campers engaged.

Have Fun
We believe everyone learns best when they’re having fun. No one makes camp more fun than a Peconic Dunes counselor. Our staff shares their passion for life and obscure interests. They always make sure they and everyone else is having fun, even when you are making your bed. One telling statistic, on a typical day, over half the community voluntarily wakes up early for one of the Morning Bears: Polar, Yoga or Alpha.
Jr. Overnight Campers also have Choice activities 2 - 3-times-a-day. The goal of Choice is to simply have fun. We offer all the same activities that we offer during Challenge, plus "a few more" to keep it interesting. Campers and staff are encouraged to invent new Choices all the time (and so, The One Direction Appreciation Society was born).
