The Perlman Music Program Family Concert Summer 2014 at The Perlman Music Program in Shelter Island, Long Island, New York.
The Summer Music School's annual Family Concert is an unforgettable experience for audiences of all ages. The tradition began seven summers ago when Associate Director, Merry Peckham, brought her string quartet, the Cavani Quartet, to visit Shelter Island. As part of their visit, the quartet performed their signature children's show for local kids and their families.
Since then, the show has become a local favorite. With the tent filled to capacity with families, the concert is full of fun musical information for kids and plenty of entertaining moments for adults.
The concert features great music, elaborate costumes, fun skits, and a musical instrument “petting zoo”. The instrumental petting zoo is especially popular, as it gives young audience members a chance to try out any of the string instruments that catch their attention during the show.
While the primary goal of the concert is to use classical music to inspire and entertain young local audiences, the concert is also a learning experience for the Program's student participants. Yet another way that we are training the next generation of classical music leaders, the Family Concert teaches students how to make their craft accessible and engaging for all types of audiences.
About The Perlman Music Program
The Perlman Music Program welcomes young musicians of rare and special talent into a richly supportive musical community.
Founded by Toby Perlman 20 years ago, The Perlman Music Program (PMP) offers unparalleled musical training to young string players of rare and special talent. With a world-class faculty led by Itzhak Perlman and vibrant programs in Shelter Island, New York City, Florida, Vermont, and Israel, PMP is developing the future leaders of classical music within a nurturing and supportive community.
Young musicians of talent need support. Left alone with their gift, without the instruction and mentoring that allows them to thrive, even the most exceptional young artists will struggle, and many may fail to achieve their full musical potential. Without this next generation of world-class musicians, the musical world and its audiences will be the poorer.
The Perlman Music Program welcomes young musicians of rare and special talent into a richly supportive musical community. Through intensive summer programs, year-round mentoring, and on occasion, an international study or performance tour, the program offers unparalleled musical training for students, ages 12 to 30, who play the violin, viola, cello, bass and piano. With a faculty led by Itzhak Perlman and comprising some of the most gifted musical talents of our time, the Program offers an artistic and personal experience that changes students’ lives forever.
The Perlman Music Program seeks to ensure that the very best musicians can take advantage of this opportunity, regardless of their economic background or financial means. |
