Ragtime, the twelve-time Tony nominated musical adapted from E.L. Doctorow's unique 1975 novel, produced on Broadway in 1988, hailed as "the most ambitious musical ever produced" is a classic story of American culture, the grandeur of the American spirit, and the epic scale of the human struggle. Ragtime asks the questions, "who are we, and who should we be?" With book by Terrence McNally, and stirring music and lyrics by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, we follow the lives of three families separated by affluence, religion and culture. Mother, the matriarch of a white upper middle class home in New Rochelle, Tateh, the socialist Jewish immigrant and his young daughter, and the African-American piano player, Coalhouse Walker Jr. All intermingle with the likes of such historical figures as Harry Houdini, Booker T. Washington, J.P. Morgan and Evelyn Nesbit. With stirring melodies, dramatic story lines and historic richness, Ratgime reminds us that the one thing proudly uniting all Americans is our "melting pot" of diverse cultures. As lyricist Lynn Ahrens so beautifully states, "there is an underlying sense of emotion, mysticism, coincidence and magic" in this tale of the reshaping of America and its journey toward hopefulness in the early 20th Century. Join this incredible cast as they dance and sing to a captivating score that draws on vaudeville's outrageous style, traditional folk music and the pounding rhythms of Scott Joplin and Ragtime. |
