Long Island Art Exhibit 2018 Art of Narrative: Timeless Tales and Visual Vignettes at Heckscher Museum of Art, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York.
An exploration of storytelling in art from the 16th through 20th centuries, with subjects drawn from history, mythology, and literature, as well as everyday life.
Mythic stories, fantastic fables and timeless literary tales always come more alive through art. Now on view at The Heckscher Museum of Art, The Art of Narrative: Timeless Tales and Visual Vignettes, explores storytelling in art from the 16th through 20th centuries. From Bible stories and mythology to modern narratives on the human condition, the exhibition captures significant moments in the human experience. The paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and photographs in Art of Narrative are drawn from a variety of sources.
Whether depicting straightforward chronicles of our shared past, beloved literary works, or intimate everyday scenes, the stories told by the artists throughout the exhibit prove the adage that "a picture is worth a thousand words". From early narrative subjects with moral messages to more modern abstract compositions, the exhibit highlights works from Heckscher Museum's rich and varied permanent collection. American modernist Arthur Dove, genre groups by John Rogers, experimental photography by Martina Lopez, and a monumental abstract print by James Rosenquist are featured in the exhibit to tell their own expansive tales. Also included are works by Alonzo Chappel, François Girardon, George Grosz, Daniel Ridgeway Knight, Henry Varnum Poor, Adolf Schreyer and many others.
