Islip Hamlet Society - Gilding The Coasts - Art Design of Long Island's Great Estates at Islip Public Library in Islip, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York.
On Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015 the Historical Society of Islip Hamlet hosts Joshua Ruff, Collections Director at the LI Museum and his presentation on "Gilding the Coasts: The Art and Design of Long Island's Great Estates". In 1946, Life Mag still proclaimed LI as "the most socially desirable residential area in the US". Well over 1,000 estates were built across Nassau and Suffolk Counties by architects such as McKim, Mead and White, Delano and Aldrich, Carrere and Hastings and others. The presentation will discuss the estates that were built by world famous architects.
They reshaped the lives of wealthy and working-class residents alike. This presentation will emphasize artistic production in both the significant path-breaking work that was done on estates by a wide array of artisans and in the art that was commissioned and inspired by the great estate movement itself. Specific LI estates will include architect Stanford White, artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany and muralist and canvas painter William de Leftwich. The program will be held at the Islip Public Library, 71 Monell Avenue 7:00PM-9:00PM and is free and open to the public. For more info: 631-245-0675, www.isliphamlethistory.org.
