Astronomy Science Lecture: The Hunt for Dark Matter March 2018 at Montauk Library in Montauk, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York.
Scientists have evidence that 80 percent of the matter in our universe is "dark" and unknown. A broad range of experiments, ranging from sensitive detectors located deep underground to powerful instruments on satellites are searching for signs of this mysterious matter.
A broad range of experiments, ranging from sensitive detectors located deep underground to powerful instruments on satellites, are searching for signs of this mysterious matter. This talk will review the evidence for dark matter and the exciting scientific quest to uncover its identity. It will also explain why we hope to be successful in this quest in the next few years.
Prof. Rouven Essig joined the Stony Brook Physics and Astronomy Department and the Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics in 2012. Among his research interests in theoretical particle physics is the nature of dark matter.

Montauk Observatory
Montauk Observatory (est. 2005) is a publicly supported, New York State not-for-profit organization as defined by IRS code Section 501(c)(3). Our mission is to bring free science and cultural programs to Long Island's south fork communities. We are also in the process of establishing an astronomical observatory (in East Hampton) with research-grade equipment that will be made accessible over the internet (at little or no cost) to students, teachers, researchers and the general public. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to help support our educational programs. Thank you for your consideration and support. |
