David Tacher Romano, president of the Or Jadash Jewish Community in Santa Clara, Cuba, will give the first lecture by a Cuban Jewish leader in the United States. The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County (HMTC) presents the first lecture in the United States by a Cuban Jewish Leader. David Tacher Romano, the president of Or Jadash Jewish Community in Santa Clara, Cuba, will discuss "Cuban Jewry: From Columbus to Castro" on Sunday, July 31, 2016.
Mr. Romano will address the history of Jews in Cuba which spans more than 500 years and encompasses refugees from the Iberian Peninsula, the Ottoman Empire and Nazi-occupied Europe. Mr. Romano will illustrate the diversity within the Jewish community and how Jews both assimilated and stood-apart throughout the changing history of Cuba and the Communist revolution.
