A certificate course of 5 beginner workshops for adults, held Saturday mornings in the field.
The secret of great gardens lies in understanding that growing plants is a process, not an event. Planning for your garden can never start too early and is basic to gardening success. Home and community gardeners who want to grow food often overlook the fundamentals when getting started, covered by the five workshops in this course:
- Site Assessment: Observing and Measuring before Planning
- Healthy Soil: Building a Compost System for Optimal Growth
- Raised Beds, Trellises, and Hoop Houses: Building What You Need
- Water-Wise Irrigation: Choosing the Right System for Your Plants
- Organic Management of Vegetable Gardens

About Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Suffolk County
A Non-Profit Community Education Agency
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County assists and educates residents, businesses and professionals in a broad spectrum of topics by providing research-based information on parenting, diabetes management, nutrition and wellness, horticulture, environmental protection, marine restoration and sustainable agriculture.
Experts from our four main program areas Family Health and Wellness, Marine, Agriculture and 4-H Youth Development reach tens of thousands of adults, children, professionals and businesses each year.
We bring this free and low-cost knowledge directly to people at workshops, children's camps, libraries and schools. We also work one-on-one with fisherman, farmers and growers to strengthen these industries, bringing tourism and advancing economic development. CCE programs have had a significant impact on communities and industry in Suffolk for nearly a century.
Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) is a non-profit community education agency established in 1917. We are affiliated with Cornell University as part of the national land grant university system started in 1862. We are educators, researchers, specialists and support personnel who are dedicated to making Suffolk County a desirable place to live and work. CCE's professional team helps preserve our county's vast heritage, protect our eco-systems, support families and provide our youth opportunities for community service and research-based education in science, technology, engineering and math. (STEM)
Our experts offer local and affordable skill training for educators, youth leaders, human service personnel, and parents. Our Family Health and Wellness educators help strengthen families and address critical issues facing them today. These programs have a cost/savings benefit for organizations throughout the county. We work directly with farmers and fishermen who rely on our research, guidance and assistance to protect the environment and to promote the economic health of these vital heritage industries. Our 4-H Youth Development programs and camps get thousands of Suffolk youth "unplugged" and out into their communities while participating in fun, hands-on learning activities taught by professionals.
To accomplish our mission, we partner with all levels of government, Cornell University, non-profits, and community groups. |
