Black History Month 28 African American Read-In at Westbury Memorial Public Library in Westbury, Nassau County, Long Island, New York.
In honor of Black History Month join us in this theatrical drama depicting the role that Long Island's Native Americans played in the Underground Railroad. This remarkable story brings to life a fascinating piece of American history. The story is told from the point of view of a female slave who flees the south and heads north in her search for freedom. It highlights the ways in which Setauketas Native Americans, along with the Shinnecocks, Quakers and abolitionist in the region, helped slaves escape through the use of codes in quilt patterns and the strength of the human spirit in the struggle for freedom. This program is co-sponsored with the Historical Society of the Westburys.
