Description: |
The Art of Making Dhal Puri East Indian Flatbread Culinary Event at Wang Center of Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York.
Dhal puri is a type of Indian-inspired flatbread that is made in Guyana on the Caribbean coast of South America. The flatbread is stuffed with a seasoned filling of ground split peas. It is made for family and friends during holidays and especially for weddings. Shakeera Thomas will demonstrate the process of using the masala brick, a grinding kitchen tool, to make dhal puri. Participants will have the opportunity to make and knead their own dough that they can take home to bake. Before participants leave, they will have the opportunity to savour homemade dhal puri.
The Presenter
Shakeera Thomas, Chapter Assistant of United University Professions, Stony Brook University, is an avid gardener, crochet artist and jewelry designer and maker of gourmet hot sauce as well as a talented foodie who has used her grandmother's masala brick to continue five-generations of family tradition in preparing dhal puri. Thomas shares her multifaceted talents and expertise from spearheading an on-campus crochet circle, the Stony Brook Stitchers, that donates its creations to Stony Brook Hospital, to bottling her family recipe hot sauce, which will be in stores soon. The masala brick is one of the featured Objects of Asia currently on exhibit at the Jasmine Gallery.
