23rd Season Children's Garden 2015 Summer Program Fun Activities at Suffolk County Farm Education Center in Yaphank, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York.
Due to the abundance of interest in the Children's Garden, we will be offering one eight-week gardening session this summer. The session meets on eight consecutive Wednesdays. At the end of the session we have a celebratory feast using whatever we can from the garden. We find that children ages 5 and up are best suited for this program.
Our 23rd season at the Suffolk County Farm & Education Center promises some exciting new activities at the Children's Garden this year. Growing interest in this CCE Suffolk program, led by Master Gardener Volunteers, has led to a renovation of the garden area, including a new hoop house for growing early and late vegetables, and special care and identification of the many pollinator plants living there. Popular projects for the 2015 Children's Garden program include:
- Potting up seeds and transplants to bring home to grow
- Growing food in raised beds, where children tend tomato and pepper plants as well as beans and sunflowers
- A redesigned pollinator garden, featuring native plants and critical wildlife habitat for the insects that pollinate our food supply
- Learning about herbs in a garden where plants are grown for dye and culinary purposes
- Enjoying strawberries as they flower and bear delicious fruit
- Adding food scraps to our compost pile and learning why Rot Rules the soil kingdom
- Identifying weeds by making personal weed ID books to bring home for future use
- Playing in the bean teepee, sunflower house and gazebo
Of course, we will include favorite activities from previous seasons, such as collecting bugs, a visit from the Worm Lady, a tour of the Butterfly House at the Farm, hayrides, and much more. On the last day, we'll have a celebratory feast, using whatever we can harvest from the garden.
Our eight-week gardening session will meet on Wednesday mornings 10:00-11:30AM. The children will be divided into two groups with age-appropriate activities. We find that children ages 5 and up are best suited for this program, which is not parent participatory. No makeup dates will be offered for sessions cancelled due to rain. Please let us know in writing if your children have serious allergies.
We hope this summer session from July 8 through August 26, 2015 will fit into your family schedule so your children can join us this summer. For more information contact Robin Simmen, Community Horticulture Specialist at rls63@cornell.edu or 631-727-7850 x 215. |
