About Lupus Alliance of Long Island and Queens
"Improving the lives of those living with lupus through awareness, education, support services and research"
The Lupus Alliance of Long Island/Queens was started out of the kitchens of dedicated volunteers and has been helping those with lupus and their families since 1955. Located in Bellmore, New York, our goal is simple; to serve, educate and find the cause and cure for lupus, while helping those with lupus live better lives while they wait for that cure.
Over the last five years we have consistently kept our costs between 7-13%, leaving over 85% of the money raised by the LALIQ for our services and programs. Our members range in age from 10-80 years old, some who have lupus, some who have lupus in their families, and others who have a friend or even an acquaintance who has lupus.
Yearly, we receive over 200 volunteers who help us with everything from mailings to handing out water to our walkers at the Walk-Along for Lupus. Our relationship with many local businesses and schools has been strong over the years, and the numbers continue to grow, although the need for more corporate help from Long Island based businesses is always needed.
The Lupus Alliance of Long Island and Queens is working to build a brighter future for all lupus patients and their families.
About Lupus
Lupus is scary; it can be life threatening, life changing and incurable. But it is also treatable, survivable and, most importantly, many aspects of the disease can be managed by you – the patient. The first step is to understand what is happening within and to your body.
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is a chronic disorder of the immune system that causes inflammation of various parts of the body. For most people, lupus is mild, affecting only a few body organs: for others, it may cause serious and life threatening problems. The body’s immune system normally makes proteins called antibodies to protect the body against viruses, bacteria and other foreign materials. These foreign materials are called antigens. In an immune disorder such as lupus, the immune system loses the ability to tell the difference between foreign substances (antigens) and its own cells and tissues. The immune system then makes antibodies directed against “self”. These antibodies react with the “self” antigen to form immune complexes. The immune complexes build up in the tissues and can cause inflammation, injury to tissues and pain. |
