Soul Doctor The Musical Journey of Shlomo Carlebach Broadway Performance to Benefit Temple Judea of Manhasset at Actors Temple Theatre in New York City, New York.
Soul Doctor is an exhilarating musical journey through the triumphs and tribulations of a cultural phenomenon. It tells the fascinating story of the father of popular Jewish music, Shlomo Carlebach, and his unlikely friendship with Nina Simone.
A modern day troubadour, Shlomo ignited the spirit of millions around the world with his soul stirring melodies, transformative storytelling and boundless love. After his escape from Nazi Germany, the young Rabbi befriended the legendary jazz singer Nina Simone who introduced him to soul and gospel music.
With the "High Priestess of Soul" as his inspiration, Shlomo created a joyous new sound with melodies that fused his roots with American popular music.
With his meteoric rise as a "Rock Star Rabbi" struggled to harmonize his traditional beliefs with the "free love" generation of the 1960s. Today, his uplifting music and message help to define America's most defiant era.

About Temple Judea of Manhasset
More Than Just A Place To Worship
From the time of our founding as a Reform Jewish synagogue in 1955, we have committed to welcoming all. Our founding leadership set our inclusive tone by ensuring that interfaith families should be welcomed into our congregation. Temple Judea was the first synagogue on Long Island to open its doors to AA and still to this day we proudly offer our classrooms as meeting places for those recovering from this addiction. With respect to children with special needs, we have always made every possible accommodation to ensure that every child receives a Jewish education and becomes a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Temple Judea also has a hearing loop installed in our sanctuary, which electronically assists modern hearing aids, allowing all to clearly hear music and words coming from the bima.
Today, we reassert our mission to commit to the principle of inclusion. Everyone is welcome regardless of age, marital status, sexual orientation, race or financial means. |
