Description: |
The Crocheted Tree Project July 2016 - January 2018 Long Island Museum Art Exhibit at Long Island Museum in Stony Brook, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York.
Come marvel at the magnificently-colorful crocheted trees on our campus, the result of an exciting community-based public art project that was a collaboration between the museum, the artist who conceived it, Avalon Park and Preserve, Inc., in Stony Brook, and the more than 200 volunteers who helped to complete it. Volunteers have made and sorted over 4,000 crocheted pieces of various sizes and colors, which have been carefully assembled and wrapped on 5 trees.
Artist Carol Hummel was the creative mind behind this project. She has created successful public art installations similar to this one in Switzerland, Norway, India, and at multiple venues in the United States, including her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Her work draws communities together across boundaries. As she says, "this is artwork for the people, by the people". It involves bringing together people of all types in a celebration. Hummel holds an MFA in sculpture from Kent State University. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and has been artist-in-residence at many institutions. The Long Island Museum kindly thanks all of our generous sponsors on this project, including Avalon Park and Preserve, ABLE Equipment Rental, Holiday Inn Express - Stony Brook, Pride Equipment Corporation, and Pepperell Braiding Company.
The Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian affiliate, dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection. |
