Parradox tells the story of the rise and fall of Pim de la Parra, from the 60s to the 90s, a controversial and creative genius who produced and directed dozens of films and changed the Dutch film industry. It’s a film about creativity and passion, about tragedy and happiness. Pim de la Parra, who was born and raised in Suriname, a Dutch colony which became independent in 1975 made the first film shot in Suriname in 1976 about the people and his homeland. It was badly received and was the reason for the downfall of his very successful filmmaking career in Holland. The film, One People (Wan Pipel) has since been given a new life and many awards. 2010, Holland, 89 min, English, Dutch with English subtitles; Directed by In-soo Radstake

Roy is a young black Surinamese studying in Amsterdam. When he learns that his mother is dying, he borrows money from his Dutch womanfriend to return home to Suriname. He has been in Holland for five years and he is astonished and revitalized by his reintroduction to his homeland. He falls in love with his native country and falls in love with a Hindu woman, Rubia. His family is scandalized. Hindus are considered second class citizens. The Hindus are equally scandalized. Roy’s family is anxious for him to return to Holland, finish his education and get a good job. Roy now understands the deep racial divide in his own homeland that he experienced in Holland as a black man. Rediscovering his own roots and what he has been running from moves his life in a new direction. Why is Holland every Surinamese's dream Suriname/Netherlands, 1976, 111 min.; in Dutch, Hindustani, Sranan Tonga, with English subtitles.
