When the autumn leaves start to turn, and the crisp fall air is here, Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and it's time for Garvies Point Museum's Native American Feast. This celebration of north-eastern Native American culture has been held the weekend before Thanksgiving for more than 25 years.
Sample native foods, spear throwing, use the atlatl, face painting, fire making, Native American films, exhibits, cooking at the fire, learn tool making, pottery making, dugout canoes, nature trails, artifacts, wigwam.
Special 50th Anniversary activity: Try your hand at making a dug out canoe. Hands-on activities during the weekend will be on-going. These will include pottery-making using ancient methods, primitive fire-building and on-site open fire cooking with samples (including our famous popcorn soup). Authentic Native American food displays with sampling; artifacts and tool technology including drilling in stone, face painting with natural pigments and spear throwing using an atlatl. Films about Native American culture will be shown throughout. Activities are appropriate for all ages. Activities are held both indoors and outdoors.
Participants can also take this opportunity to view the museum's exhibition hall, which explores Long Island Native American culture and archaeology, as well as New York State and Long Island geology. Rain or shine.
Garvies Point Museum and Preserve
Overlooking the Hemstead Harbor, Garvies Point Museum and Preserve is an exhibition devoted to the Native American culture and the science of archaeology. Relating to local regional geology, visitors will find a wealth of artifacts including maps, rocks and fossils found in the northern parts of Long Island. This elaborate museum boasts a well-stocked gift shop with various precious stones and jewelry for sale. Many classes are also available including jewelry workshops and sculpture. |
