Chef, best-selling author, and producer of the new hit series Fresh off the Boat on ABC to speak at Adelphi University.
Eddie Huang, the celebrity chef and restauranteur and author of Fresh Off the Boat the acclaimed memoir that sparked the new ABC sitcom will give a free talk at Adelphi on Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at 7:00PM in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom in the Ruth S. Harley University Center. Huang will draw from his own experience as the son of Taiwanese immigrants in leading a discussion on race and identity.
For the past six years, Huang has been the chef and owner of the Taiwanese-style bun shop on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Baohaus. His New York Times best-selling memoir Fresh Off the Boat has been adapted into an ABC TV show with Huang as producer. He also hosts the Web series Huang’s World on Vice and Snack Off on MTV.
An outspoken speaker, Huang uses his upbringing in a traditional Taiwanese family in the United States to talk about the challenges of adapting and assimilating into American culture. Through his writing and appearances, the successful chef has become an advocate for race issues in America. He sees food as a central part of culture and identity and incorporates cuisine in his discussion of cultural appropriation and identity.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by Adelphi’s International Students Society, the South Asian Student Association and Lackmann Culinary Services.
