The International Dyslexia Association Long Island Branch (IDALIB)
The Long Island Branch of the International Dyslexia Association is the leading organization that is responsible for the awareness and education of all children and adults who have dyslexia on Long Island. The outgrowth of our mission is to provide resources for Parent. Teachers and Students. We believe that within each dyslexic lies the "gift" that once unleashed will enable tremendous growth of individual potential. We are here to help you.
The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) is an organization focused on the complex issues of dyslexia and related language-based learning disabilities which make it difficult to learn to read and write. Since its incorporation in 1974, the Long Island Branch of IDA (IDALIB) has served as a resource and support system for individuals with dyslexia, parents of children with language-based learning disabilities, and involved professionals living and/or working in the New York City/Long Island area. Affiliates include individuals with dyslexia, parents, educators, administrators, psychologists, physicians, speech/language pathologists, advocates, attorneys, and others.
IDALIB believes that all individuals have the right to achieve their potential. In today’s world, achievement of that goal requires the utilization of effective reading and writing skills. Interdisciplinary research has proven that individual learning abilities can be strengthened; and experience has demonstrated that social, educational and cultural barriers to language acquisition and use must be removed. IDALIB actively promotes effective teaching approaches and related validated clinical educational intervention strategies for people with dyslexia. We support and encourage interdisciplinary research. We facilitate the exploration of the causes and early identification of dyslexia and are committed to the responsible and wide dissemination of research based knowledge..
IDA and IDALIB pursue and provide the most comprehensive range of information and service referrals that address the full scope of language-based learning disabilities. In that effort, we focus our resources in the areas of:
- Increase awareness of dyslexia in the community
- Advocacy, both to school systems and local governmental agencies
- Dissemination of information and referral services,
- Outreach to anyone dealing with dyslexia
- Promotion of scientific educational research
- Advancement of both awareness of and adherence to the
Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading.
- Referral to local specialists |
